The closed back design keeps outside sounds out, the over-ear cups are very comfortable even during long sessions. I bought these to replace the previous model HPR840, which I really liked but the main headset bracket/band broke at the cup on two pairs. This was a known design flaw and it looks like Shure has fixed this problem on the HPR840A. The new model feels sturdier since the cups only swivel, they don't fold inwards for storage. Another nice improvement is the long NON coiled cable (although - tiny complaint - they could have used a 'softer' cable as the one included is a little stiff). When my original HPR840 pairs broke I considered other brands, but in the end I really did like the HPR840 and with the improvements to the HPR840A I decided to stick with Shure, and after a few weeks using them I have no regrets.

Studio Economik had as good of a price on them as any of the ?big box' stores and had them in stock. I ordered two HPR840A sets on a Wednesday and mentioned that I really hoped they would arrive in time for a Saturday session (I live in Ontario over 8 hours away from Montreal), and Alex made sure that they were shipped out that same day and emailed me tracking info. They did indeed show up in time for my session. I have bought a lot of gear from Studio Economik over the years and they have always been great to deal with so it was a no-brainer to keep giving them my business. I will buy more of these headphones for my studio, and I will most likely get them from Studio Economik.

Now you don't have to be afraid of accidentally snagging those tiny wires. The new ones are completely protected.

But, be aware, if you were completely in love with the original SRH 840 sound signature, they have changed it ever so slightly. The new SRH 840A has an improved bass response. It's very subtle. The new sound has slightly more bass, and that bass is really tight and not at all overwhelming or bloated. I dare say the new SRH 840A is near perfect. It has a nice even sound with lots of detail, and crisp high notes without being harsh. The mids are prominent but not strident, and the low mids and bass are controlled and tight, and not overpowering.

These are really wonderfully neutral sounding headphones. Oh and the new design is even lighter in weight than the previous version. These are really light and very comfortable headphones. You can wear them for hours. Plus, the large cups completely enclose the ear without resting on your ears, do they don't get sweaty or uncomfortable.

The only odd thing is the detachable cord. You cannot use the one from your other pair. It's a different size fitting. The new cord is excellent heavy duty quality, but it is very long. Believe it or not, it's TEN FEET LONG. That is great if you're using it at home on your stereo, but might be irritating if you want to use these when out walking.

Speaking of walking, these headphones are super easy to power, so you can get all that excellent sound from just your phone. They are also closed back, so they are very good at contains the sound, not leaking, which means you won't annoy people in the sane room as yourself when you're using them.

These headphones are an incredible value in my opinion. If you can't afford these and you don't mind other people being able to hear your headphones, I would recommend the Koss PortaPro headphones. Personally, I absolutely love my new Sure SRH840A's and I really don't think I need anything more. They're just that good.

Oh and just look at them. I love the hold on black. These headphones look as good as they sound.
