Two of these arrived just in time to do a live recording of an audio play, 9 actors on stage. Got a chance to compare - not direct A/B comparisons but enough to recognize the qualities. Other mics on stage were AKG C414 (TLii and ULS), Neumann TLM 103, Audio Technica 4080, ADK 3Zigma Lol 67.
Read moreAll of them had their merits. The AA OC818s stood out with a buttery low midrange and a silky smooth high end with relatively little sibilance - still very clear. Worked very well with adult male and female voices as well as child characters.
I wonder a bit about the resonance of the grille, it has a definite tone when tapped but did not seem to affect the recording in any unpleasant way. We used the included foam pop filter which - I assume - would reduce such resonance.
The dual mode (i.e. front and back diaphragm) applications are really interesting and I can see them being very useful in studio recording when time with the voice talent is limited. Being able to alter the polar pattern and proximity effect after recording can be very helpful. Also (shhh don't tell anyone!) in dual mode it can be used with some well-known third party mic emulation software -free! ... at least for now.
