I do live choir/orchestral recordings. Obviously, you need to put some sort of array up in the air. Grace Designs provides a Lego-ish kit to do just that. The SB-SUR is designed for surround recording - three mics up front in a quasi-Decca array and two rear outboard mics.
Read more After doing a number of gigs, I moved to a pair of DPA omnis up high and several spot mics or pairs. None backward facing. The great part about the Grace system is, while I had to buy a couple of connectors, I could restructure the array, and reuse components to allow me to put up a 2 meter rod, and use the shorter piece for an ORTF/AB array. The net is the Grace kit is super high quality and infinitely flexible.
