A Legendary Compressor Returns in Hardware and Software
Shure, in collaboration with Korneff Audio and Black Lion Audio, has brought back the legendary M62V “Level-Loc” Audio Level Controller. Originally introduced in the 1960s, this cult-favorite compressor is making a comeback in both software and hardware forms, meticulously recreated to capture the original’s unique sonic character.
Korneff Audio’s Level-Loc Software Plug-in
Korneff Audio has developed a Level-Loc plug-in that integrates seamlessly into modern Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). The goal was to faithfully reproduce the unpredictable yet highly creative compression of the original while adding the flexibility of digital controls.
Dan Korneff, President of Korneff Audio, emphasized their commitment to accuracy:
“The Level-Loc has an interactive, dynamic response that gives it an unmistakable character. We wanted to recreate that sound exactly, while also taking advantage of modern digital enhancements.”
Legendary mixing engineer Tchad Blake, who played a key role in popularizing the Level-Loc, worked with Korneff Audio and Shure to test the prototype. The plug-in not only matches the hardware’s specs but also delivers the same signature compression.
Enhancements in the Korneff plug-in include adjustable attack and release times, selectable impedances, and more, making it a highly versatile tool for a variety of audio sources.
“With the plug-in, you can dial in anything from subtle compression to extreme Level-Loc grit—it’s an incredible tool,” says Korneff.
Black Lion Audio’s Level-Loc Hardware Reissue
For those who prefer analog gear, Black Lion Audio has re-created the Level-Loc compressor in a boutique hardware unit, built in collaboration with Shure. This version maintains the sledgehammer compression and saturation of the original while adding modern conveniences:
- TRS input/output
- +48V phantom power for condenser mics
- Mix control for parallel compression
- Line-level TRS output
- A15LA 50 dB pad
- Additional fixed release time option
Black Lion Audio ensured historical accuracy by sourcing original components where possible. When unavailable, they meticulously reproduced parts to match the original’s exact specifications.
“We share deep Chicago roots with Shure and a passion for great audio. This collaboration was a dream come true,” says Preston Whiting, VP of Operations at Black Lion Audio.
The Legacy of the Level-Loc
First introduced in 1967, the Shure M62 Level-Loc was part of a line of mixers designed for live and broadcast applications. In 1969, the M62V version was released, adding a volume knob for greater control.
The Level-Loc’s compression character was originally intended to minimize distortion, but engineers soon discovered that pushing it harder created a gritty, explosive sound—ideal for drums, vocals, and creative sound design.
Discontinued in 1977, Level-Loc units became hard to find. However, in the late 90s and early 2000s, Tchad Blakepraised the Level-Loc’s distinct sound, sparking renewed interest among audio professionals.
“Level-Loc goes on every record I make,” Blake has said, cementing its place as a secret weapon in many studios.
A Classic Returns
Matt Engstrom, Senior Director of Licensing at Shure, expressed excitement about the revival:
“Thanks to our incredible partners at Korneff Audio and Black Lion Audio, the Level-Loc is back with both hardware and software options. Audio engineers will love how these versions stay true to the original while offering modern enhancements.”
Whether you’re after the classic crushed drum sound, gritty vocal compression, or unique saturation, the new Level-Loc plug-in and hardware reissue offer authentic vintage tone with modern flexibility.
